Audio panel keeps expanding when switching projects [SOLVED]

It has become quite annoying. every time I switch from one project tab to another, the audio panel expands, blocking my layers.
This is how I want it:
This is what it keeps reverting to:
I need to drag the layer panel up every time I switch projects, but that isn't feasible. anyone know how to make it so that this doesn't happen anymore?

If you click the "sound" button in the timeline, you can also enable the sound in one project and have it disabled in the other.
Otherwise to disable the sound panel for all projects, go to preferences > sound and uncheck "automatic sound panel".

the automatic sound panel was the culprit, thank you!
I was looking at the interface and display tabs, but didn't think to check the sound tab.
