Hello,
I am new to TvPaint and I absolutely love the drawing feel of this software. My Question - Is there a way to export from TvPaint and choose the DPI?
I am making the switch from paper to digital animating and most of my film is in an older program called Animo. If I bring my TVPaint drawings into Animo at 300dpi or 400dpi they align perfectly with my existing paper drawings. I know I can use photoshop to change the DPI, I would love to skip Photoshop and go directly from TvPaint with a choice of DPI. Is that possible?

I don't think this is possible within TVP. But a batch job in PS should do the trick without too much of a hassle.

Animo? The original one from Cambridge Animation Systems? How can that still be running? I was a beta tester for that in the 90's ...

Well I'm currently starting on DPI. The notion of Dot-per-Inch is related to the papier size in inches (S) :
DPI x S = Pixels

Which means that if you want to change the DPI "setting" of your TVPaint project, you have to expand or shrink the picture. As a consequence, there is a chance that you get blurrier pictures when you export.

Yet if you start a new project, you can still use the above formula to compute your project dimensions in pixels !

Yes, Cambridge Animation Systems - Animo 6. I have had it working under windows 10 for a number of years now. It does have it’s glitches, most of those I have figured out by now. The batch rendering is much faster on the new computers and the extra ram is great. I also have Animo running on my Wacom Mobile Studio pro.

I have been using Photoshop to change the TvPaint exported image DPI from 72 to (300 or 400). The pixel count stays the same (3840x2160 for example) I only change the DPI. I think the dpi for Animo is important since it is from a time when scanning was the main process for importing the drawings.
I was just hoping to save the Photoshop step if I could. It would be great if I could set the DPI when exporting from TvPaint. If that is not possible then I will use Photoshop for that step.
Either way TvPaint has a great natural drawing feel and works nicely with my process.

Interesting ! So it's not only about the picture dimensions. Would you mind sharing one sample with me ? Exported from TVPaint - then updated with Photoshop ?

It's probably some metadata that is set, we've been trying to figure this out for a couple of time but we needed a concrete case.

You could easily do that with just Photoshop - create a new file with some pixel dimensions and a DPI setting, then another with same pixel dimension, but different DPI.

Thanks for the advice, I prefer to focus on the code and get real samples from real users.

Into which format do you export the pictures ?

If I remember correctly, Animo uses TIFF.

The file type can be Tiff, jpeg or png. I have 2 png images in the link below. I export them with peg holes at the top – Animo uses that to align with my existing paper drawings.
Both images are 7680 x 4320, 1 is 72dpi From TvPaint, 1 is 400dpi converted in photoshop.

Another interesting note.
7680 x 4320 @ 400 dpi
5760 x 3240 @ 300 dpi
3840 x 2160 @ 200 dpi
All are the same size in Animo (19.2 x 10.8 inches). The 400 dpi file of course has more crisp detail.

So you agree that it's tricky

Indeed : 7680/400 = 19.2 and 4320/400 = 10.8 but I assume that if you choose another dpi resolution, Photoshop decides to reduce the size in pixels.

So here's what I can see about the pictures you sent : Obviously TVPaint adjust the print size to (pixels/dpi) :
7680 / 72 = 106.6 inches, aka 2709mm
4320 / 72 = 60 inches, aka 1524mm

So at least, I think I know what to do !

At the moment, Japanese users often use paper as well,
and it is inconvenient for us to set all the files exported by TVPaint, jpeg, png, psd, etc. to 72dpi.
I would be happy if it could be resolved.
