change in playback rate

Sometimes my realtime playback drops to a much slower rate and I don't know what can cause this. I am still in the exploratory stage and fool around with all sorts of things but can't seem to repeat the change in speed. All I can do to correct it is to close TVP and reopen. Any advice?
