Does anyone here know where to find...

Post by cbandla »

... compilations of European or Asian animation made between 1900 and 1950? I'm teaching a course on history and aesthetics of animation and I'm looking for examples to show in class. I did it in the preceding quarter but its focus was limited to American Animation. I've decided to use Giannalberto Bendazzi's "Cartoons: One hundred years of cinema animation" and give more of an international overview this time around. Unfortunately, I haven't found a lot of examples online. If anyone can give me some leads I'd really appreciate it.

Try the "Masters of Animation" by John Halas.
It's a 4 volume series printed on VHS.

You can find it on eBay

Or, if you're in such game, in rapidshare.

Also, the "Masters of Russian Animation", which is a different production altogether, is a very good compilation on, well, Russian animation.

If I remember correctly there was a program about japanese propaganda cartoons available somewhere. Have a search at Cartoonbrew.com, they covered this topic in the past and even had links to some old asian animation.
