How to plan a multiplane project?

Hello,
I made some multiplane scenes in the past and i planned them instinctively. That works fine. Yes. But now, I would like to now if there is a way to plan in mathematically.
Maybe this is for the puzzle corner of the TVPaint forum
Let's say, I have the following project to do (easy values for easier understanding):
- target project / camera = 400 x 300 pixel
- the cam pans directly from A to B about a distance of 1000 pixel.
- the cams focus is on the middle-layer, the view value for Z = 1000.
- the middle layers size is 1400 x 300 pixel. Value Z = 0.
- the BG-layer value Z = -100
- the foreground-layer value Z = +100
(I hope this could be a working setup.)
How do I figure out the minimum size of the BG-layer and the foreground-layer for that pan? Is there a formula to get the sizes?
What is the value Z? Depth in pixels?
(Just to clarify: I am not searching for different ways on how to setup a multiplan movement by hand. I am interested in understanding a little bit of the math behind that concept and hope it helps me on planning the different parts of a layered BG.)
Thanks from Animark
