Size matters - drawing delay

I've noticed a strange phenomenon which may only be visible on "older" machines like my G5 PPC.
As long as I keep my projects in HDTV (1920 x 1080px) or smaller everything works fine. I can use all brushes quite smoothly, as long as the brush size doesn't exceed 50px. Drawing with my favourite pencil in 7,5 px width goes as fast as on paper.
But when I change the project dimensions ever so slightly, say 2200 x 1100px, drawing speed rapidly decreases. Even with small brushes I now have to wait for the program's reaction with each stroke. This gets worse the bigger the project is, so animation in 4000 x 2000px is nearly impossible.
This is so frustrating because, OTOH, TVP doesn't have any problem with long files, even when they use Gigabytes of disk space.
- Do others experience the same phenomenon?
- Does anybody use a decent MacPro, and is this better there?
And to the programmers:
- is this connected to some internal way TVP buffers the several versions of a frame? Is there a magic size of chunks? Can this be changed, or can I do anything about it?
I'd really like to be able to animate bigger projects, especially stuff which will be zoomed in later. Of course I'd like to get a new computer, but can't afford right now. (And while we're at it, I'd like to get a pony, too.)
