Hello all:
I'm trying to start a project in TVPaint and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the project settings like the template, the field,...etc. Can anyone explain the basics of those settings and what is the best combo?
Thanks

Templates : forget this, it's a feature that creates x layers and x frames.
Project size : you can choose a size already available that interest you or set yourself an unusual size.
Frame rate : the Frames per Second (animation's speed)
Aspect ratio : I advise you to always keep a ratio = 1.
Field : always keep Progressive
Btw, this topic is not well placed. I move it =)

So you pretty much add needed layers as you go rather than having it set up for you in the templates right?

Once you are in a project, you can make additional presets such as a number of layers and much more, and save that under File>Save Project as Template, giving it a name of your choice. Then go to Preferences, under the Edit tab>Startup, and select how you wish to have TVP start up for you in the future.

Yes , you can add layers as you go, or set up a Custom Template with the number of layers you want to start with, or use one of the preset templates available at the start-up screen.
