Hans Richter and Sandra de Weijze

Post by Sewie »

It doesn't look like it's possible to place these movies on this forumpage but here are the links:

http://www.sandradeweijze.nl/animatie_trein.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.sandradeweijze.nl/animatie_nelson.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Really nice stuff, I think!
I'm quite sure that both are made with TVPaint because I know that Hans Richter likes to work with it.

This is just delightful and the website is put together with such uncommon great taste. I can imagine how children must love this. So what pays for this, or how do they make money to make these little films?

Those first two films that I linked are for Sesame Street in The Netherlands.

"The Kat van Oblomov" is Hans' short film. He made that some years ago.
"Olli de Olifant", "Tovenaars" and "Noordpool" are for the Dutch broadcasting company KRO childrens television.

Those last three are made with (I believe) DPaint, a very early incarnation of TVPaint that only ran on the Amiga.

Sandra is a free artist who does a lot of illustration work and art teaching and Hans is an animator. The website is mostly Sandra's, I don't believe Hans has a website.

:mrgreen: I am very familiar with D-Paint which I worked with on my Amiga 3000. It was our introduction into computer assisted animation. I drew on paper and scanned the drawings with the very first Sony camcorder, which was still analog technology. The result softened the pixels into charcoal-like chunks. Sandra and I also made a few Sesame Street films with D-Paint and I particularly remember a short series called, "Alice Kadizenberry", which I believe someone put on YouTube recently.

Already back then I went from D-Paint to an NLE called, ShowTime, which had two soundtracks; unheard of on the other platforms and considered a breakthrough. All things considered, our work flow was much the same as it is today. Between D-Paint and ShowTime I used Take 5 to edit images and create multi-layering of imported D-Paint layers. Back then I was already using Directory OPUS -- as I am today.

Those were the days! I used to fiddle around with DPaint for a bit but then went back to paper mostly. I know that Opus is still around for the PC but I don't use it any more. And Take 5 still exists as linetest software for the PC. Though I believe back then it was called Take2.

I think Hans and Sandra are still doing new seasons of Sesame Street animations, so hopefully we have more of their work to look forward to.

:D I meant Take 2 (my slip came from my love of jazz). We have at least two members of this forum (who don't show up too often but are lurkers) who also make Sesame Street films with TVP. Maybe there are more I don't know of.

Ah, cool, I used to use DPaint on the Amiga also! It had a great brush engine and was the first digital cel animation app I used... wish I had kept copies of the animation I'd done back then :-( When I first started using TVPaint it completely took me back to the DPaint IV days

I know of Bouwine Pool, Juan de Graaf, and Johan Klungel. Or do you mean someone else?

Hello Michael and Paul and everybody,
First of all, many thanks for your kind words about the website and movies ( especially from someone whose work I, in turn, admire very much!
Furthermore Michael is absolutely correct;
"Olli the elephant", "North pole" and "the Sorcerers" were made for KRO children's television in 1990 with D-paint on the good old Amiga, mine is still working!
"Oblomov's cat" was drawn on paper and finished on a p.c. with the CTP animation program.
"Train" and "Nelson" were made for Sesame street with TV-paint on a macbook.
Our third Sesame-baby "Baby sister" will be on the website soon and we're working on our fourth, " At the marked".
There are about thirty illustrators/animators in Holland who, of and on, make animations for Sesam straat, but I do'nt know ( them all )
who does or doesn't work with TV-paint. A lot of them do, I believe. I do know some of them also work with Anime studio.
By the way, can someone tell me why the movie-clips in the gallery don't seem to play ( on a macbook )
many regards
