I have just realized that when I am using control v in the timeline, that rather than pasting over the contents in a frame, that tvp is in fact inserting a new frame! ...and moving the existing frames over. Is there any way that I can use control-v to paste the contents on the existing frame? as this is messing up my timing.

if you select the frame(s) first, then Crtl-V to paste a copied frame, you will overwrite the selected one(s).
