I tried to assign delete the instance from animation panel to shift + backspace, but it starts working different.
Here's the starting position
This is how it looks after I press delete the instance from animation panel
But when I start from the same starting position and use the shortcut I assigned,
the position of the first instance jumps forward. And that is not very nice for me.
Is it a buggy, or .. no it's a bug, they should act the same, yes. Or?

I prefer to use the key command:
Layer: Exposure: Delete Instance Head.
You can find this feature also in the main menu>Exposure>Remove instance head.
Does this help you, or does it not do what you are asking for here?

Re: delete the instance acts different with shortcut?
I found out the same command yesterday. Until the discovery I've been dragging the unwanted instance away, like hiding it under the next intance to keep the length of the layer intact. And only yesterday i got a feeling that there must be a better way. Hah. Slowly but surely.
But the thing what I wanted to do with this particular delete the instance- command, was that I sometimes (actually, many times) have loose instances, old keyframes building up into the end of the layer. And then I want to clean the layer with the delete the instance... Anyway, I can easily do this through the animation panel, because it doensn't need to be done so often. But this wasn't my question.
The quirkiness was that the button gives out a different end result than the shortcut for the exact same command. And this is what I'm wondering (procrastinating).

Re: delete the instance acts different with shortcut?
The problem seems to be in the shift - key. If I try the same command with ctrl-backspace, it works like perfect.
It seems that only in a command where the layer length needs to be changed, a combination with shiftkey doesn't work as it should. I took a reroute and this is what I have now. I say problem solved!
