Transparency from Photoshop to TVPaint

Post by francisMILLER »

Hi
I am wondering why a shape cut in PS with smooth, feathered edges, brought onto a background image in TVPaint will suddenly present white shiny lines on the soft edges that prevents a proper blending of the cutout into the background? Is there a solution to this issue?

Hello,

Do you import .psd files directly or .png / . tga ?

In case of pictures (png, tga etc...), it's not related to TVPaint, it should work if you export a No PreMultiply Alpha image (and import the same way).

Not here. When I create stuff in PS with fuzzy edges, I never see a white rim when importing in TVP.

Photographs are different. Sometimes it's not enough to just use the magic wand to isolate stuff, especially from a bright background. Using the magic wand only will most likely give you a visible bright rim. Since PS doesn't allow me to save "pre-multiplied", I used some other hacks, mostly by painting black behind or into the object.

Hey, so they are jpegs, photographs of charcoal drawings, I saved as PSD, the blanked part of the transparent image was selected with lasso. I have to try different things yet later on today and will share my conclusions if any, thank you for your replies.

You should better directly load the jpeg into TVPaint and use the Scan Cleaner FX ;)

yes, it's much faster, and the spline allows more control.

I really wish I could put my stuff together,
on this image (composite 2), sky, light and water are set on different layers and have been cut with Photoshop
I don't want to use TVP scan cleaner as I am using dirty charcoal drawings and I have to tolerate great changes to the image to get rid of the useless portion, and the transparency also applying to the the desired portion of the image cause a problem for me.
It seems TVP has added this white shine (it appears nowhere else) at the feathered edge of the sky. Is there a solution to this, aren't PSD files compatible with TVP?

Stuff like this I composite with "multiply" instead of erasing the white. Needs some white BG in the first place, and maybe a mask outside.

With scans it helps a lot if you adjust the scanner so the paper is really white right in the scan.

or "post-adjust" your scanned stuff by using the luma histogram FX in tvpaint (3 or 4 points when needed).
you can try also the "Darken Only" merging mode instead of "Multiply".
