Hello!
I just watched the amazing short film "rain town", and am very curious if any of you know how he achieved the reflections and ripples effect on the water? Is it some combination of 3D and projection mapping?
Here is the film on youtube in case you missed it:
Thanks!

I would also be curious to know how the effects were achieved . I know that this film was made using TVPaint , but I am not sure if other software was used to produce some of the effects. Maybe Fabrice knows ?

About this specific effect, I don't know.
But I can ask, since I have Ishida-san contact infos.
Also, I have a couple of interface screenshots.

With no plugins? I can't do anything anymore without my 20 or 30 plugins!

Would you divulge your list of plugins Paul?
Here's a side by side example. To the right, the original ripple, to the left, it laid down in perspective with some added effects.
Excuse my jumpy tree.. done in a rush to get out the door..
With TVP, I always like the simple approach. Here's a little quick animation done by doing fx / distotion / tornado on a gradient background..
Picked up and tilted with the fx / motion / keyframer. The little branch quickly painted on another layer, then that layer duplicated, flipped, placed underneath, and made partially transparent.
Then a little white hand painted raindrop added on a layer on top of everything else. Perhaps a similar technique was used on a much larger scale, and placed to fit into the scenes here..
Just a wild guess, but it's one of the ways I might go about it..

Thats Cool CartoonMonkey, Thank you. I should try it out.
Also, we still need to figure out how he displaced the reflection by the ripples. Mabe its easy to do with 3D or AE, but I'm not sure.
Thanks again for the tip

I tried and searched in vain for hours for an old file (10 yrs old) where I did the reflections with simple random brush strokes on paper, animated with cross dissolves. I always have to remind myself not to get too realistic, because it cuts me off the simple and fast solutions. The more realistic, the more plug-ins people seem to need.

I have no idea how the drop/ripples were done but here is a variation on CartoonMonkey's post using the FX/Distortion/Wave effect (inset), then hand modified and squashed into an animbrush. Then scaled and stamped a few times onto a background, with drips and rain animbrushes added after.

It looks to me like the Raintown effect might actually be some kind of 3D plugin and I'd be curious to hear how it was done too.
