Flipping drawings alternative

Post by furushil »

I was wondering if anyone could suggest me any flip alternatives.

When doing in-betweens, for me the best way to flip drawings right now is to punch the keys to go to the next and previous instance.
I tried to use "flip book" and "flip previous frames" but it goes to fast.
I need to stay on the previous and next frame for a couple of mille seconds.
That is why I punch the keys back and forth. The problem is that my hand starts to hurt after a while because of the punching.

I remember there is an equipment (hardware tool) that you can buy to go back and forth with a wheel. But I forgot how it was called.
Could someone tell me the name of the tool?
Would this be a good alternative?

I guarantee you're going to like it. The Shuttle Pro is considered an old standard best by many film editors and at least one old animator.

Ok, I am going to order one today :D

I really cannot punch the keys anymore.

I just hope that the buttons are easy to press. Do they make a loud "click" or are they soft and quiet?

Another possibility, easy to try... The scroll wheel on the mouse can be assigned shortcut keys - Wheel Up = Exposure:Prev Loop and Wheel Down = Exposure:Next Loop.
Also try Ctrl Wheel Up and Ctrl Wheel Down for other moves like: Exposure:Go to Previous Instance Exposure:Go to Next Instance

Yes, that would be also a good idea but I don' t have a mouse. Have not used one for years.

I didn' t know there is "Exposure:Next Loop" ! Another thing learned, thank you.

With the ShuttlePro I use the wheel which has small dimples on its surface to rotate with the tip of my finger -- very intuitive and creates no resistance. This is a gadget developed for editors who spend hours jogging between individual frames in search of perfection. In addition to that you have 15 ergonomically positioned buttons which you can program to any command you wish. You have nothing to worry about. It's been on the market with no surface changes made to it for years, possibly decades.

EDIT: BTW, if you use an NLE you can continue using the shuttle seamlessly with that too and doing the exact moves and pressing the same type of commands which will give you a sense of working within a single program.

Years ago ì bought a griffin powermate USB Dial with the idea to use it for flipping
but it doesn't have clicks so you don't get tactile feedback on the number of frames you have flipped, making it useless for that purpose.
i now use it to rotate the project(its my animationdisk knob) for that it works fine and its a very nice solid feeling alu dial.

The shuttlepro does have clicks, let us know how you like it.

I have a ShuttlePro but I never use it. It has tactile feedback but the feedback doesn't match up perfectly to the software's rate of keypressing, so the tactile feedback isn't actually reliable.

Nowadays I always, always, ALWAYS use the Flip Manually command. It's bound to one of the buttons on my stylus. It's great. You can linger on your previous drawing as long as you want and it doesn't flip back until you let go of the button.

Not the case on my TVP. Vegas is a different matter, but TVP each single click represents the next frame in both directions and has been like this ever since I got the device eons ago.

I moved the topic, as it is still related to TVPaint use.

(Off-topic discussions is to talk about everything but TVPaint :))

"Flip Manually" is indeed a great shortcut, but it depends on the zoom level of the display to determine how many pixels of 'y' mouse movement constitutes a frame change. This means it doesn't work at all if you're doing pixel-level stuff, and it moves perhaps too quickly when you're zoomed out on a large canvas. Maybe it should calculate based on screen pixels rather than document pixels?

Flip Manually does not work for me unfortunately. I have to stay with the cursor where I am about to draw the line. When I use the stylus to flip manually I lose the "contact" with the drawings.
It is very good for "rolling" a part of a scene to check how it looks like but for quick inbetweening it is not convenient in my opinion.

As soon as I get the ShuttlePro I will test if the tactile feedback is reliable.
