Change Rotation pivot point?

Hi,
I often make a freehand selection of the head of a character, and use the Transform Tool to rotate it. But often I'd like to adjust the pivot point before rotating. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks,
Jay

in the Custom Brush panel:
Handle
select > Custom

and you should update!

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your help! I updated to 10.5.7.
I created a freehand custom brush of my character's head and saved it to a Custom Panel. Now I want to paste it onto a new body and adjust the angle of the head with the neck as the pivot point. In the CustomBrush panel, I chose Handle>Custom and moved the pivot point to the neck. Now I can stamp it onto a new body at the same angle, but I want to adjust the angle. If I move over to the Tool Panel and select CustomBrush>Angle, I can change the angle, but I can't see the change on the head until I move back to my drawing.

If I stamp the head onto the body and decide I want to adjust the angle, I can use Selection>Freehand and draw around the head, but then the pivot goes back to the center of the head.

Is there any way I can stamp the head onto the body and adjust the angle interactively, keeping the pivot point at the neck?

Thanks,
Jay

use the keyboard short cut C

this gives instant feedback. Also better not to rotate an already rotated and stamped down brush, because the rounding errors in recalculating the pixels cause increased fussiness.

so ideally always go back to your original brush, which is easy when you put it into a custom panel. (do make sure to first set the custom pivot position and only then place it in the custompanel, that way you only have to do that once.)

Thank you for this valuable tip ! I thought I remembered that there was some keyboard shortcut which allowed the user to preview the rotation of a Cut Brush , but I could not remember it and as far as I can tell this handy keyboard shortcut ( C = rotate Cut Brush) is no where mentioned in the User Manual . (a search of the TVPaint 11 online user manual using the search terms "Rotate Brush" , "Rotate Cut Brush" , "Rotate Custom Brush" , "Change angle of brush" , turns up "No results" . (what else could it be ? If this is covered in the manual I can't find it ...) Going back to the TVPaint 10 user manual it is only mentioned in the list of keyboard shortcuts in the Appendix , but that is easy to miss. But in the TVPaint 10 manual under Section 7 discussing "The Custom Brush tool options" the shortcut key C is not mentioned as a way to show a preview of the brush handle rotation .)

Now that this useful shortcut has been revealed , I hope that in future versions of TVPaint it could be improved so that after using the keyboard shortcut C to see the preview of the brush rotation that clicking Enter/Return would stamp the brush in place where I positioned it . Unfortunately, as it is now after I let go of the C key the rotated brush image doesn't stay where I had it positioned . It would be more useful if it would stay in place.

My point was , try finding that in the User Manual :

+1!

This is very useful info, but I am still frustrated because I really want to be able to change the rotation pivot point on a selection, not a custom brush. Why can't I do that?? Or can I..???

You just can't. Maybe someday.

Your answer is blunt, but honest. :D Seems bizarre to me that one tool allows it, but anther does not. If one thinks this is a good thing to be able to do, why only do it on the cut brush? For rotation the cut brush is almost useless to me because it does not allow you to rotate and then commit, as rotating on the selection does, so I can't ever use it. I have to stamp it somewhere blank on the page and then select it and then rotate and move it where it needs to be, which is a multi step process, just so I can rotate. It shouldn't be. On the other hand, I can't move the handle.

The other issue is using Keyframer to rotate. Again, you can't move the handle and that is a huge issue for certain moves.

What I was trying to say was: I think we all agree that it would be amazing to have this feature and we are all waiting for it. But for some reason it is difficult to add. Otherwise we would already have it in TVPaint 9. We just have to be patient.

But you can move the handle in the keyframer!
Even animate the handle position.
though granted its not ideal (we are told improvement is on the todo list) because the handle stays put, while the object shifts around it.

its called Pivot not handle (another of those famous little tvp inconsistancies)
If you use a custombrush as the source in the keyframer you can change easily change the pivot by manually changing the custombrush handle.

Yes, that also works. Here's a simple example . The Pivot point was adjusted from the default Center of the frame to the point where the character's head meets the neck . Then the Angle is adjusted to have the character's head position tilt down . Angle 0.00 degrees at start, 5.00 degrees at the end. (I also used the time profile editor to "ease-in" to the end position ... )
