Pen doesn't draw anymore, if used outside of TVPaint

Post by schwarzgrau »

Since a few weeks I have to struggle with a weird behavior: If I use my pen, on my second monitor (let's say to open a reference image) and come back to TVPaint I can't draw or click on any button using my pen. I have to use my mouse click somewhere in the TVPaint interface to be able to use the pen again. Since this is a problem which only occurs in TVPaint I thought I should ask here if someone knows a possible reason. By the way my wacom drivers are version 6.3.11w3, but if I update to 6.3.15-1 I always get a lot of jittering, even in fullscreen mode.

I sometimes have this issue, but only when I am outside to make demo or trainings : I've never been able to reproduce it in TVPaint offices, so I thought it occurs only when mu Mac is connected to a video projector :|

After you mentioned the projector I assumed it has something to do with switching monitors, but unfortunately it happens even if I just work on one monitor. I just have to click with my stylus outside of the TVPaint window to make it useless in this software. Clicking with the mouse into the interface makes it responsive again, but it's pretty annoying.

I'm having this issue too. Version 11.

Sometimes the click just stops working. I can make it happen when I import an image from somewhere else. Drag and drop. But I've no idea how to get it back again.

I'm having this problem too when switching to another app and coming back to tvp, pen keeps working fine outside of tvp but not in tvp, after clicking a few times with the mouse in tvp pen "randomly" works again, it is super annoying!
(i'm working with tvp 11 on mac OS X 10.10.5)

Actually, it's not "random" : each time you get block with the pen, use a mouse or a trackpad.

I will do deeper researches to understand why this bug happens.

Hi Elodie,
the strange thing in my experience is that it doesn't work immediately after using mouse or trackpad, I have to try several times switching to another app and back to tvp and it happens often that it takes a couple of minutes since the pen behaves normally again (or I have to restart tvp), that's why I said randomly, because I can't understand what's the thing that makes it work again.

Oh ? Usually, I just click with mouse or trackpad and then, stylus is back again...

It's hard to fix a bug that behaves differently on different computers -_-"

I got the bug simone described with TVPaint 10 for a few weeks, but I can't remember what I did to fix it. Now I have "only" the bug Elodie mentioned, where I need to click only one time with the mouse. Unfortunately it's still annoying enough to use the mouse every time, cause I use the stylus a lot to open reference images or just to check new mails etc.
Maybe we could try to isolate the bug to one wacom driver, TVPaint or OS X version (I'm assuming this is an OS X only bug?).

As mentioned before I'm using

OS X 10.9.5
TVPaint 11.0.2 64 bit
Wacom Driver 6.3.11w3
(but the problem occurred with 6.3.15-1 too)

It seems the 32bit version doesn't suffer from this problem, but I never used it before. Is it still the pro version, only slower or is it like the standard version?

Technically, it is like a Standard Edition, with Pro Edition features.

The main difference is in the language used to make the software compatible with Mac. 32 bit uses Carbon, while 64 bit uses Cocoa.

So it should be some kind of bug or compatibility issue with the Cocoa version? But I guess this information isn't a big help...

It is the usual suspect, indeed.

i have something similar though i am on win10 .
regularly my pen stops working, often when switching between working in a panel or playing a project and then going back to drawing.
i can always get my pen back to life by quickly tipping the backside (eraser) to the cintiqsurface.
which is less annoying then having to search for your mouse or trackpad. so maybe this works for some of you as well?
i am so used to this flicking of the pen now but still its a bit of a nuisance.
