Wacom Intuos/strange stroke thickness issue

Dear TVPaint community,

I'm totally new to TVPaint and I hope you can help me. :) I'm afraid, my question is quite specific:

Currently I'm setting up my Wacom tablet for TVPaint. Although the pressure sensitivity is working, drawing with the tablet does not feel intuitive yet: When I am drawing short quick strokes (from high to low stylus pressure), it looks like TVPaint "inverses" the line thickness. As if the stroke starts thin, then needs some time to get thick and then ends abruptly. But that is only the case with the short strokes. And when I paint very very short strokes, sometimes they don't even appear at all. It is very confusing and hard to describe.

I have painted digitally for several years in Photoshop with the same tablet and I haven't encountered such a problem yet.

Especially the abrupt ending of the stroke confuses me. Is there any setting within TVPaint that I need to change? I would like the strokes (even the short ones) to end thinner and more transparent, as I decrease the pressure at the end of the stroke.

I am using a PC with Windows 10 (64 bit). My Wacom Tablet is Intuos 5 Touch. The version of my TVPaint is 11 (Professional, Education Edition). No matter which brush I used (pen, pencil,...) the problem always occured. :(

Hopefully you can help me...
I really highly appreciate any help, tips and ideas!

All the best,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, welcome here !
sometimes they don't even appear at all. It is very confusing and hard to describe.
Could you send us screenshot or even record the issue with your camera ?

We must see your interface, especially the tool panel on the left :)

Bonjour Elodie,

thank you so much for your quick reply!

Unfortunately I failed to record the issue - but I made a screenshot and observed the problem closer to better describe it.
Enclosed is the picture. I used the pen tool as an example. Size and power both proportionally depend on the pressure (by the way, is it possible to make the opacity also depend on the pressure?). Anyway, on the canvas I drew some quick strokes (from left up to right down). While doing so, I first pressed very hard and at the end of the stroke I almost didn't press at all. But you can see, the stokes look as if they need some time at the beginning to grow, but at the end they just end abruptly. Neither the size nor the power nor opacity are decreasing.

What I observed: The stroke follows my pen with a delay! When I move my pen, the stroke is not directly beneath my pen tip but about half a centimeter too late. So also when I stop my pen - the stroke stops about half a centimeter too early, very abruptly and does not taper off in a nice thin line. It always feels as if my strokes are shorter than I draw them! This also explains why the extremely short lines don't appear at all - because the lines are shorter than this delay space.

Now what is strange: this problem does not occur in Photoshop. Also regarding the performance, my PC is quite new and strong, especially the graphics, so it should be able to cope with it. So most likely I overlooked some settings in TVPaint.

It would be really cool if you helped me! :)

Hello and welcome Audiovisualisa,

take a look at the Panel for linesmoothing.

- If linesmoothing is activated it is "normal" that the stroke needs some time to reach its maximum size. (That's one reason, I don't use linesmoothing often.)
- If linesmoothing is activated and set to a higher value (let's say 20 and over) it is normal, that your stroke follows your pen nib with a little distance. In this case you can lower the value or deactivate the real time function.

Also, if you deactivate real time but leave line smoothing activated at a higher value you will see how line smoothing changes your stroke after you lift your pen nib. For e.g. the beginning of the stroke changes from full size to kind of a fade in and the stroke will also be smoothed.

My english is not the best, so I hope my words are halfway understandable.

Hello dear guys,

thanks for your replies!

@ Animark:
Yes!!! That's it - Linesmoothing was on and caused the problem. It was set to 20%. I deactivated it and now it works muuuch better! I will play around with those settings and find out what works best for my purposes. Thank you sooo much! Btw, your English is super, I understood everything and it solved my problem! :)

@ Thierry:
Wow, I just received the software some days ago and didn't know there is already an update! Thanks for the tip! :)
