Hi!
I bought a new iMac which runs El Capitan and am using TVPaint 10.5. TVPaint seems to be lagging a lot. It reacts very slowly, resulting in messed up drawings because is can't catch up with my tablet.

Hi suneda,
I would advise you to use fullscreen mode, this should greatly reduce the lag.

You should try a search for "El Capitan" on the forum. There have been issues reported (starting with Yosemite and continuing with El Capitan) . Not just lag for TVPaint , but other programs , too. And Wacom tablets acting odd ...suneda wrote:Hi!

See this post:

However, this might not apply to your situation since your new iMac came with El Capitan pre-installed, you weren't updating to El Capitan from a previous operating system.
I haven't yet updated to El Capitan , I'm still on Mavericks (10.9) so I can't give you any practical advice on solving the lag issues, but I would again suggest you search the forum , because I do recall seeing solutions posted. I'm told that one solution is to switch TVPaint to Full Screen Mode to get rid of the lag while drawing. ( * EDIT: I see that Thierry has already posted about using Full Screen Mode ... so I think I was right about that. )
Check this thread (which is about Mac OS Yosemite, but I think it continues to the advent of El Capitan):

Thank you! That fixes the drawing part. I still don't get why TVPaint is the only software my computer has to wait for sometimes (especially when jumping in the timeline), but I can at least draw now

TVPaint is not the only software having this issue (I mean the lag issue when drawing). Photoshop, Painter, Artrage .. we all suffer more or less from it.
It will be fixed with the next update anyway. Should be ready within the month.

Re: Mac OSX 10.11 and TVPaint 10.5
I'm running 2K and 4K TVPaint scenes (500 + frames with multiple layers) on my Macbook Pro and not experiencing lag , so it might be your Preview display settings. What do your Preview settings look like ? (Windows > Settings > Preview Settings ) . How big is your project size ? 720p , 1080p , 2K , 4K ? How many frames and layers ?suneda wrote:Thank you! Play around with adjusting the parameters on the Preview settings to see if that reduces any lag you are experiencing. If you have it set to Full Quality 100% preview try reducing it to 85% or 80% for smoother playback (at lower quality playback the line quality may look slightly choppy , but the entire scene will playback faster ...
If you must see it in full quality , render a .mov or .avi of the scene . Or only play selected part of the scene you are currently working on (set Mark-in/Mark-out ... for example , if you have a 500 frame scene , but you are only working on the section from frame 121 - to - fr. 159 , Mark-in at 121 and Mark-out at 159 , so you only playback that section .) Another idea is with a very long scene at high resolution you can split it up into several Clips of 100 frames each . Then when you are working on any section of it , only that active Clip is putting any strain on your computer's processor and RAM .
I opened the 4K scene I am currently working on in TVPaint 10.5 and set my Preview Settings to "Force Proxy Render" , "Full Quality Preview" ... the Proxy rendering took about 20 seconds , but then the playback was perfectly smooth . Scrubbing through the drawings on the timeline (or jumping between sections as you mentioned) showed no lag. (but again , keep in mind that I am still on Mavericks ,so if this is an issue related to El Capitan then everything I am reporting about my experience may be irrelevant to your situation , but I would still suggest you try adjusting your Preview Settings to see if that makes any difference.)
I would not keep it set on "Full Quality Preview" or "Force Proxy Render" all the time , but only when I need to see a full quality preview.
.

Re: Mac OSX 10.11 and TVPaint 10.5
But suneda has TVPaint 10.5 , so I think there is no update coming for 10.5 , only for 11.0.2 . Maybe suneda's lag issue is related to something else , such as Preview settings ?Fabrice wrote:TVPaint is not the only software having this issue. suneda, have you tried to update your Wacom drivers ?
Re: Mac OSX 10.11 and TVPaint 10.5
I downloaded the latest I since my computer is brand new.
For now the only difference in my preview settings was the background proxy render, quality is at 50 percent. Let's try if that makes a difference Thank you all for the tips!
