When I have to draw a shadow for exemple, I always do the flat colors first then use it as a mask (you can export the colors separately for the different areas) to draw on the areas I need. And I always want to have that shadow on another layer to be able to edit it independently of my flat colors.

But what you're describing to me seems like a simple magic wand selection to me. You choose an area then you draw in it. But if i understand you, you want to save a few clicks to have the area selected directly where you begin to brush right? that's kind of clever :) new idea for a new tool (I d'ont think I would use it but that's nice). But you can set two shortcuts to quickly select the area (for exemple with "shift+b" for a magic wand tool in replace mode) and then to brush (with "b" for exemple), it's transparently quick to me.

Good ideas, but I find that when I use the magic wand on the line layer and then go to the paint layer below, the selection area has no bearing on that paint layer, which surprises me. Although a shortcut would work, it still appears to be a multi step process as I have to select on one layer, switch to the other layer, switch to brush, draw, deselect, go to next instance and do it all again. If the brush could work like the bucket and refer to the area above, it would be instant. I guess I am asking a lot if it means a brand new tool, but what the heck. :)

But you can refer to display with the magic wand so you still can use the layer above :) so you don't have to change layers (but anyway you can still add to your shorcuts "go up + magic wand" and "go down + brush", it's still transparent when you work because you can click on your shortcut and instantly draw.)

Ah, okay. I totally get that. The thing I don't get though, is how you create a multistep shortcut in TVPaint. I know how to assign a key to a specific function, but not to do all the steps you describe. Maybe it can be done with third party software, but I suspect you are talking about creating it within TVPaint.

Jumping back to my earlier question about creating a blurred line, it seems to me that the quickest way for me to do it is to just draw a blurred line with a soft pen. One stroke and it's done! I am trying to create a brush which has a really soft graduation, but I am having a hard time. The airbrush is the closest and it is soft, but despite adjusting the profile, I can't get a truly gentle graduation. Even more useful, would be a brush which has a soft graduation on one side, but is hard on the other so that I can draw with it and then use the bucket fill on the other side and it fills up to the colour on the hard side. Is that even possible?

If you have a stylus that supports tilt, you can try the brush Projection or other tilt-based modifiers. This would be similar to an airbrush used very close to the paper instead of a distant spray. You might succeed that way in making a brush that has one hard edge and one soft edge.

You can either create buttons on a panel and set them as shortcuts or you can directly use ctrl+click on the assign button in the shortcut panel to add multiple shortcuts to a single key (you assign layer up to you key then you select the magic wand shorcut and ctrl click assign).

For your brush question, i guess you can assign the rotation of your custom brush to "azimut", using a shape soft on one side and hard on the other side

Hmm. I'm not able to find these settings in TVPaint for the airbrush. I can see the Azimuth setting under Aspect and Angle, but they don't achieve what you describe. Any more specifics on that?

As for shortcuts, not sure what you mean by "ctrl+click on the assign button". Sorry if this turns out to be obvious. I don't mean to sound like a dope!

Just open your shortcut panel, choose a shortcut and a key. Then to change your shortcut, you click on the "assign" button. Well, just click on it while you're pressig the "ctrl" ket and instead of replacing your previous shortcut, they adds up and you have a key that triggers two shortcuts.

When I set Azimuth on my Angle parameter, my brush rotates as my pen rotates.

Got it. Thanks!

I get what Azimuth is meant to be able to do, but it doesn't seem to be making any difference.

Your brush doesn't rotate?

I think this depends on the tablet one uses. Mine is the first generation cintiq, it doesn't do no fancy pen rotation ...

Oh of course!
