Can you "clear" the white area of an imported jpeg?

I've imported a jpeg of a title card. I'm resizing the card to look like a pullback and I want to use the light table to inbetween the positions. The problem is that I can't see through to the type font to inbetween it. The white area around the type is blocking my view. Is there a way to "clear" the white area so that the type becomes visible using the light table?

Or as Slowtiger mentioned, just use the preset version of Scan Cleaner from the Image menu. There are actually two Presets: Scan Cleaner (Soft) and Scan Cleaner (Stronger)

Another option for what you are describing is to use the Magic Wand Selection Tool to select all the white area around the Type , then click on Delete , which deletes all the selected white area.

But Scan Cleaner is probably easiest for what you need to do.
